Finland Stay Perfect With 6-2 Win Over USA

Finland made it three wins from three at the 2026 IIHF World Championship with a 6-2 victory over the United States at Swiss Life Arena on Monday afternoon. 9,206 fans watched the Finns score four goals in the first period and chase Joseph Woll inside 22 minutes.

How it unfolded

Finland came out flying. Lenni Hämeenaho opened the scoring at 5:29 from Patrik Puistola and Anton Lundell, then Puistola made it 2-0 at 9:11 from Hämeenaho and Aatu Räty. Aatu Räty stretched the lead to 3-0 at 13:42 from Mikael Granlund and Saku Mäenalanen, and Mäenalanen finished a four-goal opening frame at 17:43 from Eemil Erholtz and Atte Ohtamaa.

Anton Lundell made it 5-0 on the power play at 1:57 of the second period from Hämeenaho and Granlund, and Joseph Woll was pulled at 1:57 in favor of Devin Cooley. Matt Coronato finally got the United States on the board at 8:33 from Tyler Bertuzzi and Jackson LaCombe, and Ryan Leonard added a power-play strike at 13:24 from Coronato and Logan Cooley to cut it to 5-2.

Hämeenaho sealed his second of the night at 11:48 of the third period from Granlund and Räty to make the final 6-2.

Goaltenders and shots

Justus Annunen earned the win for Finland with 30 saves on 32 shots. Joseph Woll took the loss with five goals against on 10 shots before being relieved, and Devin Cooley stopped 17 of 18 shots in relief. Hämeenaho led all scorers with 2+1, Granlund finished 0+3, and Räty added 1+2.

Finland move to 9 points and a +9 goal differential atop Group A. The United States drop to 1-2 with three points. Finland are back in action Wednesday against Hungary at Swiss Life Arena at 20:20 CET, while the United States face Latvia on Tuesday at 20:20 CET.
